Valley Stream North High School

Physical Education Department

 

The physical education program of the Valley Stream Central High School District supports the educational goals established by the Board of Education, reflects a desire to comply with the NYS Learning Standards, and supports the Physical Activity and Health Guidelines of the Surgeon General and National Center for Disease Control.  Physical Education is the component of the total education program that contributes to the direct development of each student, through the natural medium of human movement in physical activity.

 

The program is a carefully planned sequence of learning experiences that are designed to promote the growth, development and behavior needs of each student through participation in purposeful and enjoyable activities.  Listed below are the curriculum of activities at both the Junior High and Senior High levels.

Team Sports

 

The physical education student, who learns and participates in team sports within the program, shall have the opportunity to achieve each of the following goals:

ü      His/her optimal physical health and fitness

ü      Socially and emotionally

ü      Physical skills and knowledge for worthy use of leisure time throughout the student’s life

ü      An appreciation of all levels of performance and achievement, including that of others to a higher or lesser degree

ü      His/her decision-making and problem-solving skills

ü      Leadership and followship skills

ü      An understanding of sport in local, national, and international contexts

ü      A variety of activities that motivate the student to participate in worthwhile physical activity, throughout the student’s life

ü      Personal living skills

 

Additionally, the student shall specifically develop:

ü      A sense of safe game play and responsibility.

ü      Strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination of the large muscle groups of the body.

ü      Cardio-respiratory fitness by participating in vigorous activities.

ü      Fine motor skills and agility.

ü      Strategies for effective game play.

ü      Appreciation of the individual’s contribution to the effectiveness and success of a group performance, task, or goal.

Personal Fitness

 

The physical education student who participates in personal fitness promotion activities shall be able to develop each of the following goals:

ü      His/her optimal physical health and fitness

ü      Socially and emotionally

ü      Physical skills and knowledge for worthy use of leisure time throughout the student’s life

ü      An appreciation of all levels of performance and achievement, including that of others to a higher or lesser degree

ü      His/her decision-making and problem-solving skills

ü      Leadership and followship skills

ü      An understanding of sport in local, national, and international contexts

ü      A variety of activities that motivate the student to participate in worthwhile physical activity, throughout the student’s life

ü      Personal living skills

 

Additionally, the student shall learn about proper nutrition, weight control and athletic performance.

Adapted Physical Education

 

The physical education student who participates in an adapted program shall have the opportunity to achieve each of the following goals:

ü      His/her optimal physical health and fitness

ü      Socially and emotionally

ü      Physical skills and knowledge for worthy use of leisure time throughout the student’s life

ü      An appreciation of all levels of performance and achievement, including that of others to a higher or lesser degree

ü      His/her decision-making and problem-solving skills

ü      Leadership and followship skills

ü      An understanding of sport in local, national, and international contexts

ü      A variety of activities that motivate the student to participate in worthwhile physical activity, throughout the student’s life

ü      Personal living skills

 

The adapted program shall be individually designed to meet each student’s need.

1. A student may be eligible to participate in the adapted program when a student:

a.       demonstrates and achieves a low physical fitness score, or

b.      is recuperating from injuries or accidents, or

c.       is convalescing from a long or short term illness and is fit to attend school, or is suspected or identified with a handicapping condition that would limit success in the basic program.

Dance Education

The physical education student who participates in dance education activities will be able to develop the skills, knowledge, understanding and an appreciation for dance to last a lifetime.

Individual and Dual Lifetime Sports

 

The physical education student who participates in individual and dual lifetime sports activities shall have the opportunity to achieve each of the following goals appropriate to the activities:

ü      Physical skills and knowledge for worthy use of leisure time throughout the student’s life

ü      An appreciation of all levels of performance and achievement, including that of others to a higher or lesser degree

ü      A variety of activities that motivate the student to participate in worthwhile physical activity, throughout the student’s life

Adventure Education

 

The physical education student who participates in adventure education activities will be able to develop each of the following goals:

ü      Participate in individual, small and large group challenge and initiative activities

ü      Initiative activities, decision-making and problem-solving experiences that promote personal living skills
